Wedgewoods Wildfire Fuel Management Project

October 10, 2023/in Uncategorized

The Cheakamus Community Forest (CCF) will begin a wildfire fuel thinning projects on the south and east sides of Wedgewoods Estates this week. Lil’wat Forestry Ventures will carry out the work funded by Forest Enhancement Society BC.

The area is largely a pine forest that was hit hard by pine beetles leaving many standing and fallen dead trees that are now a significant wildfire risk. The site is immediately adjacent to the Wedgewoods neighbourhood. Reducing the amount of fuel will help protect the neighbourhood and add to the northern fuel break intended to create a defensible space for a fire from the north heading toward Whistler.

Some mountain bike trails will be affected and will be closed when work is taking place on or near them. The bottom of High Hopes goes through the work area. Out There and Comfortably Numb/North Secret exit onto the Wedge FSR which will have active logging trucks and other equipment on it. Please obey all signs and instructions. This is an active logging worksite. If you’re out there on these or other trails, pay keen attention to road traffic.

All trail impacts will be reinstated afterwards.

The crew estimates it will take 4-6 weeks to complete the work. If snow comes earlier, work will be paused and start again in the spring.

Please contact the CCF at info@cheakamuscommunityforest.com if you have questions or concerns.
