Wedgewoods Wildfire Fuel Thinning Project

October 10, 2023/in News

The Cheakamus Community Forest (CCF) will begin a wildfire fuel thinning project along the Wedge FSR on the south and east sides of Wedgewoods Estates. Lil’wat Forestry Ventures will carry out the work funded by Forest Enhancement Society BC. Access to the site will be along the Wedge FSR. The crew estimates 4-6 weeks of work with debris burning at the end, and will resume in the spring if snow comes earlier.

Wedgewoods Fuel Thinning Project Area

The site is mainly a pine forest that was hard hit by pine beetles in the last decade leaving many standing and fallen dead trees. It is a high priority treatment area due to the proximity of Wedgewoods. Removing the dead trees and reducing the fuel load reduce the risk to the neighbourhood and create a defensible area to the north of Whistler where crews could take action in the case of a wildfire.

Some mountain bike trails are in or near the work site. The lower section of High Hopes goes through it while Out There and Comfortably Numb/North Secret exit onto the Wedge FSR. Some trails will be closed for public safety. This is an active logging site. Obey all signs and instructions from the crew. If you are on other trails in the area or on the Wedge FSR, be very careful around road traffic as there will be logging trucks and other equipment using it. Any trail impacts will be fixed afterward.

Contact the CCF at info@cheakamuscommunityforest.com if you have questions or concerns.

Rest assured, the ‘Spectacular’ centuries-old Douglas fir is not in Cheakamus Community Forest logging plans

September 15, 2023/in News

Last week, the Pique published a story about an old growth Douglas fir near Loggers Lake that was found to be at least 750 years old. The headline called it ‘spectacular’ and the Cheakamus Community Forest (CCF) whole heartedly agrees! Thanks to the unique aspects of running a Community Forest managed by a non-profit partnership, the CCF protected many areas of old growth fir, cedar, and hemlock over the last decade.

Back in 2015, the CCF identified provincial old growth management areas that are legally protected from harvesting. It found many more areas in the tenure that also deserved protection because of ecological sensitivities, recreational use, or both. The CCF initiated an Integrated Resource Mapping Project where it met with the Squamish Nation, Lil’wat Nation, RMOW, WORCA, AWARE, Alpine Club of Canada, and commercial recreation operators to determine which additional areas should be protected.

From this collaborative approach, the CCF voluntarily agreed to set aside even more forest in what it calls Ecosystem-based Management (EBM) Reserves. At this point, about 50% of the full tenure is off limits to harvesting. Further, the CCF is committed to continuing its moratorium on logging old growth outside of these Reserves. The article didn’t give the Douglas fir’s exact location, but it is protected because of these commitments.

The area around Loggers Lake and Jane Lakes are included in EBM Reserves because of the ecological values and recreational use. Have a look at this map…the orange hatched areas outline all EBM Reserves in the tenure managed by the CCF. The solid orange polygons are other protected areas.

The CCF recognizes that these ecosystems are sensitive and important to our community. Unlike a privately held forest tenure, having a Community Forest allows these kinds of discussions, and decision-making that reflect our community values.

Proposed Harvesting Plans – Next Steps

August 23, 2023/in News

The CCF shared its proposed 5 year harvesting plans with the community in May and asked for feedback. Boy, did you give us feedback! Thank you. Concerns were largely focused on a few sites that contain mountain biking trails in Cheakamus, near Jane Lakes and above Function.

So what did we do about it? We met with WORCA soon after to have an overall discussion then went on site in Cheakamus to walk the main trails and area in question. Heather Beresford, CCF Executive Director also attended a Toonie apres in June at Whistler Connection with the plans and maps and spoke to as many people as possible about their concerns.

We agreed to keep sharing information and to formalize a planning process so that the steps are clear, consistent and will be repeated every year.

Our commitment is to modify the Cheakamus blocks to minimize impacts on trails, and to finalize and sign off on a planning process that we follow annually so that we don’t have any surprises in the future. WORCA and the CCF meet next in late September and we’ll keep you posted.

2022 CCF Indicators Report

April 19, 2023/in News

We know you’ve been waiting for this! The 2022 Cheakamus Community Forest Indicators Report is complete and posted on the Annual Reports page. Last year was a slow one for the CCF with not much harvesting so the numbers are small. But we’re deep in the permit approval process so expect to be more active in 2023.

CCF Strategic Plan 2022

April 7, 2023/in News

The CCF Board engaged Whistler-based Vantage Consulting Group to develop a new strategic plan in 2022. The forest industry has changed since the CCF started in 2009 and its strategic plan needed a refresh. The CCF has always been a leader in sustainable forestry grounded in its Ecosystem-based Management approach as well as being the first community forest to sell carbon offsets in BC. To capture these changes, a new strategic plan was needed. Here’s a teaser…

VISION – The CCF is a model of regenerative forestry that mitigates the impacts of climate change and that the CCF partnership is recognized as a model of reconciliation, supporting the prosperity of the RMOW, Lil’wat and Squamish Nations through a thriving local economy.

Have a read…we think it is inspiring as well as a clear road map.

CCF Open House Q&A February 28, 2022

Thanks to those who completed the survey. It is now closed and the CCF will review the input. In general, most people were supportive of the plans with numerous comments requesting the CCF protect old growth and Spotted Owl habitat, take more efforts to avoid habitat impacts, and a few comments questioning the effectiveness of wildfire thinning projects.

CCF Open House – March 29, 2021

March 10, 2021/in News

The Cheakamus Community Forest hosted a virtual open house on March 29, 2021 from 4 – 6 p.m. The open house reviewed proposed 2021 harvesting and wildfire project plans, and discussed issues raised by the attendees including old growth harvesting and wildfire fuel thinning treatments.

The CCF posted a survey asking for input on the proposed 2021 harvesting and wildfire program plans. The survey results were reviewed and considered by the Board as it develops its plans.

A recording of the open house can be found here. It is 2 hours long.

The Board will consider the input in regard to the 2021 operational plans and other planning initiatives. An FAQ document containing the questions and answers from the webinar as well as survey results will be published on this site and the RMOW website at www.whistler.ca/CCF in the near future. No personal information will be published.

If you have questions, please contact Heather Beresford at hberesford@whistler.ca or 604-935-8374.
